ABOUT
The Ball is an episodic first person singleplayer puzzle mod for Unreal Tournament 3 with an Aztec touch to it. The mod takes place in a recently discovered mysterious Aztec temple inside the top of a volcano. No one knows what is inside the huge temple, but as the player slowly progresses through the world and travels deeper and deeper into the temple and surrounding volcano, more and more of its secrets are revealed.
The player has to use the Impact Gun to move a large steel ball around and utilize that ball to solve puzzles and get around obstacles. Impact Gun aside, the mod uses all new custom art to establish a unique, stylish, and atmospheric experience.
Its gameplay is original and fresh, and largely physics driven. Unlike most games that involve a ball, this mod does not give the player direct control over the ball, but lets them control it indirectly through a standard first person view, resulting in less I-accidently-rolled-myself-into-a-hole-and-now-I-have-to-start-over gameplay, benefiting the experience the mod offers.
The focus of the mod is on providing a unique, fun, challenging, but not frustrating experience set in a very moody and atmospheric world. Unlike most puzzle games, this mod is not bright and cartoony, but dark and scary. The mod tries to capture the oldschool feeling of games from around 2000 which were almost solely set in dark indoors. The feeling of the place is similar to Unreal meets Tomb Raider. An environment similar to what one could expect in a Tomb Raider game, but with a warmer and more colorful "Unreal-like" touch to it.
The mod is episodic in nature. Part 1 was called Pehua (The Beginning) and was released in June 2008, Part 2 - Oztoc (In The Cave) will be released around September or October 2008.
